Guardians of the Spirit Molecule: DMT Entities
Is there intelligent life hidden within DMT hyperspace. 👽 Who are they? What do they want?
DMT entities are one of the biggest mysteries in the psychedelic sphere.
They’re humanoid creatures that live in psychedelic hyperspace.
DMT entities (sometimes called “machine elves”) usually accompany travelers on large, breakthrough doses of DMT (dimethyltryptamine).
They may appear in benevolent, playful, prankish, and sometimes ornery ways. Entities seem to perform with childlike innocence while possessing wisdom unfathomable by our human minds.
In some cases, they’re described as divine — coming down to us as if from a higher state of being. They’re intelligent and sentient — well aware of our presence.
One of the most curious themes of DMT entities is that most people who encounter them agree they have some sort of agenda (though it’s not clear what, exactly, that agenda might be).
The term “DMT elves” was coined by the late Terence McKenna — one of the greatest psychedelic explorers, writers, philosophers, and ethnobotanists who ever lived.
McKenna and countless other psychonauts report being “greeted” by some mysterious entities while on a breakthrough DMT trip.

DMT Entity Origin Theories
There are a lot of questions about the true origins of machine elves — are they inhabitants of another dimension?
Are they spirits or souls of past humans?
Are they divine beings or angels?
Or are they simply a byproduct of our natural tendency to anthropomorphize otherwise meaningless patterns and visual stimuli?
Nobody knows for sure, but there have been some interesting theories put forward about their origins:
1. Denizens of the DMT Realm
Perhaps the entities we encounter are inhabitants of the psychedelic field of consciousness — a world beyond ours we temporarily gain limited access to with DMT.
Within this psychedelic “spirit realm” different forms of sentient consciousness may exist outside the physical world.
2. The Brain as Consciousness Generator
The brain takes sensory information from the environment around us and translates it into experience as a “generator” of consciousness.
Changes to the parameters of it’s understanding of reality through DMT results in us experiences what feels like another dimension.
3. Alien Communication
Extraterrestrial lifeforms communicating with us through the psychedelic experience (and/or maybe in dreams?).
Information they communicate to us comes in the form of visual language — a universal language and concept that's fundamental to the DMT entity experience.
4. The Psychedelic Microscope
DMT acts as a tool for seeing something that’s already there but we’re unable to see with our standard human hardware.
Could it be that DMT is able to change the frequency of our consciousness and enable us to “tune in” to other “channels?”
5. Divine Contact
Perhaps an all-powerful creator invented psychedelics as a way of delivering tidbits of wisdom to us when we need it most and/or communicating directly with us.
6. Tapping the Collective Unconscious
Could DMT elves be the manifestation of Carl Jungs’ so-called "collective unconscious?" Jung believed this to be a storehouse for all knowledge and experiences of sentient beings.
This could explain why so many people experience shared experiences and why they're so keen to provide us with information that has a direct benefit on society.
7. Anthropomorphic Recognition
Humans have the innate ability to pick out anthropomorphic data in otherwise chaotic patterns. Could machine elves be a result of the mind picking out what appears to be faces or humanoid figures in otherwise random and chaotic fractal patterns?
8. Meme Theory
A meme, in the scientific sense, is an idea, behavior, or skill transferred between people through imitation. It's possible that the experience of the machine elves are memes too — ideas passed on through other people (namely, Terence McKenna).
The idea is that the reason we experience machine elves is simply because someone has talked about them in the past.
Are DMT Entities Real?
The real question here is, “what does ‘real’ actually mean?”
The branch of metaphysics that deals with this question is called ontology.
There are two metaphysical positions that could be used to determine whether DMT entities are real or imagined:
Here are 2 arguments:
1. Physicalism
“Anything with a physical form is real, everything beyond that is imaginary. In order to exist, something must involve observable phenomena.”
DMT entities are not real because they don’t have a detectable physical form.
This position establishes that nothing experienced in the DMT realm is real. It’s all in our heads.
2. Idealism
“Reality is created entirely in the mind of the beholder.”
DMT entities are real if they’re experienced. They don’t need a physical manifestation to exist.
When you’re experiencing something, it’s as real as it gets. Whatever experience you’re having is real by all accounts. You’re there, living it at the moment. Just because it’s no longer there when you come out of the trip doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.
In fact, many people report the DMT experience feels “more real than reality itself.”
It’s as if the reality we experience on a daily basis is a delusion, and the psychedelic DMT realm is the “true” reality.
The Different Types of DMT Entities
Everybody experiences DMT entities a little bit differently.
For example, some people describe seeing angels, ghosts, or buddhas; others experience something a lot more alien in nature — lacking humanoid features entirely.
Here's an excellent breakdown by @fathermckennaa about the different types of DMT entities:
Aliens
Angels
Ascended Masters/Buddha
Awakened Humans
Botanical Nightmare Creatures
Bride of the Devil
Circus Ringleaders

DMT Entities Appear In Research
Dr. Rick Strassman, the first DMT researcher in the 90s, was perplexed by the frequency of encounters his subjects had with DMT entities.
“I was neither intellectually nor emotionally prepared for the frequency with which contact with beings occurred in our studies"
Here are some of the interesting findings of Strassman’s research:
99% of people who encountered DMT entities exhibited a strong emotional response during the encounter.
The majority of people interpreted the beings positively (96% intelligent, 96% benevolent, 78% sacred, 34% helper) — only 11% listed the beings as “malicious.”
Most people (~66%) who meet DMT entities are given a message or a task.
81% of respondents reported the encounter felt “more real than reality.”
Almost 90% of respondents say the experience led to lasting improvements in well-being and life satisfaction.
DMTx
DMTx (extended state DMT) is some of the most interesting research in the field of psychedelics right now. It explores long-duration DMT experiences using a device called the “Matrix Machine.”
DMT only lasts a couple of minutes, so the extended state device is designed to allow users to remain in DMT hyperspace for significantly longer periods of time (several hours, in theory) at roughly 5 times the intensity of ayahuasca.
This program, co-founded by Daniel McQueen, is based on previous work by Dr. Andrew Galimore and Dr. Rick Strassman.
By allowing researchers to remain in DMT hyperspace for longer periods of time, we may be able to get more data about the nature of DMT entities.
